Itinerary
Day 1 - First Encounters & Introductory Ride
Arrive at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg where you will be met by your transfer company Saddlebag Shuttles who will then take you to Horizon Lodge (3 hour transfer). On arrival there will be Light lunch, horse introductions, and an evening ride before dinner.
Day 2 - Open Plains & Swimming with Horses
set out on a sporty morning ride through an open valley teeming with wildlife. After a few hours in the saddle, take a refreshing break at a protected dam, where you'll have the unique opportunity to swim with horses. The afternoon ride is relaxed, providing a chance to see hippos along the river.
Day 3 - Ride to Bellevue Lodges & Buffalo Hunt
It's an early start for a long ride from Horizon Lodge to Bellevue Lodges. Traverse game-rich areas with breathtaking views of the African plains, home to a variety of wildlife, including Cape buffalo. The day ends with an unforgettable African sunset.
Day 4 - Return Ride & Game Drive
Return to Horizon Lodge, following a different route through diverse landscapes. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive in nearby reserves, where you may spot the "Big Five.
Day 5 - Bush Breakfast & Camp Davidson
Head deep into the reserve, riding through areas with a true wilderness feel. After about three hours in the saddle, indulge in a bush breakfast near a giant wild fig tree. Later, transfer to Camp Davidson for a night under canvas, perched high on a ridge with stunning views.
Day 6 - Sunset Lake, Splashy Canters, and Polocrosse
Explore the north-eastern areas of the reserve, with exciting canters along the way. You'll ride alongside Sunset Lake, home to hippo, and enjoy exciting splashy canters. The afternoon offers a chance to experience the thrilling game of polocrosse.
Day 7 - Mustering Horses at Dawn & Sundowner Spot
Start your day with a magical dawn muster of the horses, followed by a scenic ride through the eastern wilderness. In the afternoon, you'll follow a route with optional cross-country jumps, leading to a breathtaking sundowner spot.
Day 8 - Final Ride & Transfer to Airport
Enjoy your final ride, choosing your favorite route for the ultimate riding experience. After lunch in the garden, it's time to bid farewell as we transfer you back to Johannesburg Airport. This marks the end of your Horseback Safari in South Africa.
