Why Zanzibar for a Safari?

Nowhere on earth epitomises tropical island bliss like Zanzibar. Yet there's so much more to this sun-soaked refuge than sailboat spotting and drinking tall cocktails. Venture away from its glistening beaches into Stone Town and you'll hear the stories that shaped the island's history as an East African trading hub and helped it become the ethnic melting pot it is today. Zanzibar is a laidback, culturally rewarding destination that offers barefoot-luxury living with plenty of fun-filled activities for the whole family.

Diving & Snorkelling

With optimal underwater conditions and remarkable marine diversity, Zanzibar is world-famous for its snorkelling and diving. The Menai Bay Conservation Area contains untouched coral reefs suited to divers of all abilities. Clear and shallow waters in many areas of the island make snorkelling as easy as strolling off the beach and into the ocean with your face mask and fins...

Beaches

With nearly 300 sunshine days a year and enclosed by sapphire waters, Zanzibar is an idyllic destination for a family vacation. The cerulean ocean laps the palm-lined shore on its glorious swimming beaches like Mnemba and Matemwe. From the comfort of your beach lounger, you won't tire easily of gazing over the glistening Indian Ocean, the occasional dhow boat appearing on the horizon. And if beach lounging does lose its shine, there's much more to keep your family busy on this versatile island.

Flora and Fauna

Zanzibar's marine parks hold a colourful mix of wildlife. Among these are dolphins, whales, turtles and the world's only herbivorous marine mammal, the dugong. Add to that, the tuna and marlin that swim in the deep seas which are the prized by big-game fishermen. While Zanzibar's off-shore wildlife is the star of the show, visitors can also find fascinating terrestrial animals in its wildlife reserves. Take a guided tour of Jozani forest, which is the endemic home of Kirk's red colobus monkey. Other animals to see in the island's only national park are Aders's duiker, bush baby and the Zanzibar servaline genet.

Stone Town

At the heart of the Zanzibar City, Stonetown is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, ornate 19th-century buildings and buzzing markets. This atmospheric old town exudes every bit of its rich history as an East African trading centre. Taste your way around Stone Town on a spice tour, or explore its many mosques, forts and palaces, looking out for its archetypal hand-crafted teak and mahogany doors.
