Mozambique island and the Quirimbas
Strolling its cobbled streets, it doesn't feel like much has changed on Mozambique Island since the Portuguese built a naval base here in 1507. Its historic sites are mostly in the north of the island and include Sao Sebastian Fort, the oldest still standing in sub-Saharan Africa which took 50 years to build. Sightseeing aside, worthwhile family activities include snorkelling, dhow cruises and picnics on secluded beaches. Still largely underdeveloped, the Quirimbas Archipelago off Mozambique's northern coast has just a few small lodges scattered across its 32 islands. Visit the vibrant coral reefs of Medjumbe, ancient baobabs of Quilaluia, or Ibo Island for a cultural experience to remember. Anywhere in the Quirimbas, you will fall into the easy rhythm of swim-eat-sleep. Other activities like dhow cruises and picnics on deserted beaches ensure the whole family is enchanted.
Gorongosa National Park and Niassa
Before Mozambique's civil war reduced numbers by 95%, Gorongosa was among the most wildlife-dense reserves in Africa. With peace restored, the park is again home to elephant, hippo, antelope and species like the pygmy chameleon found only in the dry montane forests of Mount Gorongosa. The ongoing conservation work in Gorongosa make it a compelling place to visit and a park that will continue to deliver excellent experiences into the future.
