Why Mozambique for a Safari?

After years of civil war that ended 25 years ago, Mozambique has emerged as a favourite off-the-beaten-track destination for outdoor adventurers. What lures many here is the slow pace of life on its sun-drenched archipelagos with white-sand beaches. Another pull is Mozambique's reputation as a top diving destination with rare and exquisite marine life. Yet the game-viewing in its pristine wilderness reserves such as Gorongosa makes Mozambique an auspicious safari hotspot.

Mozambique Family Safari Itineraries

Although Mozambique is a wildlife destination in its own right, many visitors choose to visit one or two beach lodges, usually after taking a safari elsewhere in Southern Africa.

If your main aim is to see wildlife, Mozambique is best combined with South Africas Kruger National Park or Sabi Sands for the ultimate beach and bush family safari. Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique is now also an excellent “bush” reserve to visit, with excellent sightings and a new lodge. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a short enough flight from South Africa: start your day with a Big Five game drive and end it with a sunset dhow cruise. The islands of Quirimbas are serviced by flights from Tanzania, so Mozambique can also be easily combined with an East African safari in Kenya or Tanzania. Family Safari Accommodation

Most visitors to Mozambique head straight for the Bazaruto or Quirimbas archipelago where superb beach lodges mark this glorious stretch of Indian Ocean coastline.

Bazaruto, especially, is highly developed for tourism and offers high levels of comfort and service. The casually luxurious beach lodges and exclusive boutique hotels welcoming guests here are among the most desirable accommodation in Mozambique. Many of our partner lodges have dive centres with scuba and snorkelling equipment for hire as well as qualified instructors to help get you ready to explore.

Bazaruto Archipelago

Africas largest marine reserve protects the warm turquoise waters and diverse aquatic life of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Idyllic beaches on five glittering islands provide ample chances for sun-worshipping, as well as diving and game fishing for more active guests. Dolphins, whale sharks, turtles, humpback whales and the rare dugong are just some marine animals you might get up close to when diving amongst the colourful coral reefs in these turquoise waters. Indeed the beaches of Mozambique are world class – a hidden treasure in today’s travel world.

Mozambique island and the Quirimbas

Strolling its cobbled streets, it doesn't feel like much has changed on Mozambique Island since the Portuguese built a naval base here in 1507. Its historic sites are mostly in the north of the island and include Sao Sebastian Fort, the oldest still standing in sub-Saharan Africa which took 50 years to build. Sightseeing aside, worthwhile family activities include snorkelling, dhow cruises and picnics on secluded beaches. Still largely underdeveloped, the Quirimbas Archipelago off Mozambique's northern coast has just a few small lodges scattered across its 32 islands. Visit the vibrant coral reefs of Medjumbe, ancient baobabs of Quilaluia, or Ibo Island for a cultural experience to remember. Anywhere in the Quirimbas, you will fall into the easy rhythm of swim-eat-sleep. Other activities like dhow cruises and picnics on deserted beaches ensure the whole family is enchanted.

Gorongosa National Park and Niassa

Before Mozambique's civil war reduced numbers by 95%, Gorongosa was among the most wildlife-dense reserves in Africa. With peace restored, the park is again home to elephant, hippo, antelope and species like the pygmy chameleon found only in the dry montane forests of Mount Gorongosa. The ongoing conservation work in Gorongosa make it a compelling place to visit and a park that will continue to deliver excellent experiences into the future. There is a new lodge to stay at and 4x4 game drives are available to help visitors explore this largely untapped wilderness for safari tourism.
