Itinerary
Day 1 – 4: Fly to Cape Town in South Africa
Spend your first three days exploring Cape Town from your base at Welgelegen House, a stunning fourteen-roomed Victorian guesthouse. The ensuite and family rooms are beautifully appointed with every possible amenity. Just a short drive away are attractions like the Table Mountain Cableway, Camps Bay and the shopping hub of the V&A Waterfront. Just some exciting family activities during your stay might include visiting the endangered African penguins at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, wining and dining in Stellenbosch or soaking up Atlantic Ocean views from Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Day 4 – 7: Fly to Tanda Tula in Timbavati Private Game Reserve
Your residence for the next three days is the Nkarhi Homestead at Tanda Tula Camp, where you’ll unwind in the picture-perfect beauty of endless plains and meandering rivers. Wildlife roams freely across the unfenced border with Kruger National Park. Stay in one of eight luxury suites or a family room with a private plunge pool and the option for outdoor showers. Spend carefree family days on informative game drives and walking with a guide through the unspoilt wilderness spotting the Big Five. Tanda Tula’s completely private, off-the-grid location also offers some incredibly rewarding stargazing at night to give you a completely new perspective.
Day 7 – 10: Fly to Pafuri Tented Camp in Kruger’s Makuleke Concession
Spend an adventure-packed three days at Pafuri Tented Camp in the Makuleke Concession on the banks of the Luvuvhu River. Situated at the meeting point of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, you’re in a prime position for intriguing encounters with wildlife from all three countries. Pafuri’s accommodation comprises seven family-sized tents, each with its own indoor and outdoor showers. Your luxurious tent’s adjoining private deck offers the perfect refuge for watching elephants saunter down to the river for a splash and a drink. Discover the biodiversity and serenity of Makuleke’s incredible terrain on morning and afternoon game drives in open-sided 4x4 vehicles. You might even be lucky enough to see large herds of buffalo or stealthy predators like leopard and hyena. Also be on the lookout for iconic landmarks in this reserve such as Lanner Gorge, Crook’s Corner and the Fever Tree Forest. Fall asleep every night to the sounds of the bush and rise to a dawn chorus of birds, frogs and other wildlife. Pafuri’s riverside location means that bird lovers are often treated to rare sightings of lifer species such as the Pel’s Fishing Owl. More adventurous families can opt for guided walks with armed guides who are eager to share their indigenous knowledge of the African bush and help you discover some of the smaller fauna and flora often missed from a 4x4 vehicle.
