Cape Town & Kruger National Park

Soak up the stunning beauty and cultural diversity of Cape Town, where you’ll spend five nights in the historic seaside village of Simon’s Town. Your well-situated hotel overlooks Boulder’s Beach which a resident breeding colony of African penguins calls home. From boutique shopping to fine dining, there’s plenty to keep your family entertained in Africa’s most celebrated city and its surrounds. On the next leg of your beach-to-bush safari, you’ll swop Cape Town’s ocean, mountains and winelands for Sabi Sand Game Reserve where thrilling wildlife encounters are the order of the day.

Itinerary

Day 1 – 5: Fly to Cape Town in South Africa

Nothing can quite prepare you for the exquisite beauty of Tintswalo at Boulders, located within the Table Mountain National Park. This modern and sophisticated lodge overlooks Boulders Beach, where a famous breeding colony of endangered African penguins resides. Tintswalo has nine bespoke modern family suites named after famous ships and individually decorated in celebration of Simon’s Town’s maritime history. In this charming fishing village, you’ll find an eclectic mix of museums, shops, cafes and restaurants. Take a stroll down to Jubilee Square, where there’s a statue of a naval dog called Just Nuisance who has an incredible story. From the jetty here you can set off on a whale-watching cruise or rent paddle boats and kayaks. If you want to venture further afield, Cape Point Nature Reserve near the tip of Africa is an outdoor-lover's paradise with rugged cliffs overlooking pristine beaches and cerulean seas. If your family are keen hikers, there are many trails of varying difficulty in Table Mountain National Park which afford panoramic views of the Cape Peninsula. But the fastest route to the summit is via the aerial cableway which you can take without breaking a sweat.

Day 6 – 10: Fly to MalaMala Camp in Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Next up on your itinerary is MalaMala, the largest and oldest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa which borders the Kruger National Park. Your stayover at MalaMala Camp combines supreme comfort and luxury with sweeping views of the Sand River and subtropical shrubland typical of this area. With 18 well-appointed suites ideal for families, this distinctly African camp is decorated with old maps and photographs alongside striking works of contemporary art. There are few destinations in Africa where sightings of all the Big Five are as common. Twice-daily game drives and bush walks are your best chance for up-close encounters with animals but don’t be surprised if you also spot wildlife while lounging on the camp’s wooden deck. Aside from the big game, bucket-list wildlife sightings in MalaMala can include hunting packs of endangered African wild dogs. After the activities and excitement of the day, spend magical starlit evenings in the traditional reed boma, enjoying sumptuous meals with your family around the campfire. When you aren’t exploring the bush with your knowledgeable safari guide, take respite from the hot sun in the camp’s infinity pool which boasts magnificent views across the Sand River. Other camp amenities include the “Monkey Club” for children – an air-conditioned library with satellite television. There is also a fully-equipped fitness centre.
