Itinerary
Day 1 – 2: Fly to Nairobi in Kenya
Spend the first night of your Kenya family safari at the iconic 1930's Giraffe Manor boutique hotel set in a thick indigenous forest where the resident Rothschild giraffes roam freely in the surrounding sanctuary. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hand-feed these tall and tawny creatures. The giraffes will entertain you while they ruminate on their food and pop their long necks through the windows in an effort to join you for breakfast or afternoon tea.
Day 2 – 6: Fly to Tumaren Tented Camp in Eastern Laikipia
You will spend your first night at the eco-conscious Tumaren Tented Camp, situated north of Mount Kenya, before joining a walking safari for two nights of fly camping in nature. Discover the pristine Laikipia wilderness and its inhabitants while riding on or walking with camels. This unique safari experience underscores the immense natural beauty of Laikipia which supports a higher diversity of large mammals than any other region in East Africa and is also home to the Masai and Samburu people. Your first fly-camping stopover is beside Nyasura, a sacred rocky outcrop used by ancient hunter-gatherers with remnants of flints, graves and pounding stones nearby. As the light starts to fade, scale the mountain slopes for sundowners and spectacular views of the surrounding Laikipia wilderness. The next day, you’ll traverse the acacia-dotted plains with its diversity of big game and plenty of wonderful photo opportunities. On the course of your journey, you may run into elephants wallowing in muddy stretches of the river or even a lion, leopard or African wild dog. Spend your final day walking through the wilderness before arriving back at Tumaren Camp in the afternoon, where you can settle back in to watch animals enjoying the salt lick beside the camp from the comfort of an armchair.
Day 6 – 10: Fly to Mara Olapa Camp in Masai Mara National Reserve
Mara Olapa is an eco-friendly bush camp inside the Masai Mara Reserve near Kaboso Crossing, Double Cross and the Marshes of Musiara. This idyllic bush refuge boasts six beautifully furnished ensuite tents as well as a family-sized tent. An ecotourism initiative, Mara Olapa runs off-the-grid on solar power and also supports local communities with sustainable employment and fair-trade opportunities. During the season, you can view large migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra as they cross the plains in search of greener pastures. Due to the camp’s far-off location, it’s not unusual to witness a pride of lions or a leopard nearby. The unfenced camp also allows small plains game to roam freely between the accommodations and the main area. However, your safety is the highest priority and local Masai Moran guards are on hand to protect you day and night. Should your multi-day walking safari have taken it out of you, feel free to rest your feet and opt for a 4x4 game drive with Masai guides eager to share their indigenous knowledge of the area with you.
