April – September

Make a quick stopover in Nairobi before your family jets off to the Karisia Hills in Kenya’s eastern Laikipia region. From here, take camel safaris led by expert Samburu guides which is a family experience you’ll never forget. Your next stayover is at a working cattle ranch in Laikipia’s central highlands where life moves at a different pace. Your family holiday ends with the perfect post-safari getaway to Watuma on the palm-fringed Kenyan coast. This tropical retreat can be a place of complete and utter relaxation, but if the ocean calls, diving and snorkelling in these protected waters is the ultimate sport.

Itinerary

Day 1 – 2: Fly to Nairobi in Kenya

Your Kenyan family holiday starts with a quick stopover in the capital of Nairobi where you’ll stay at the Serena Hotel with its beautifully landscaped gardens and swimming pool. Everything you could possibly want is here, from comfortable family rooms to a gym and a free shuttle to and from Nairobi’s city centre.

Day 2 – 5: Fly to Tumaren Tented Camp in eastern Laikipia

Your next home away from home is the eco-friendly Tumaren Tented Camp located in the eastern region of Laikipia. You’ll ‘glamp’ in one of six luxury tents which sleep families of up to five with all the basic amenities you need, including running water and solar-powered lighting. Spend your days discovering the pristine Karisia Hills on guided 4x4 game drives or from the back of a camel for a safari experience like no other! Laikipia is home to the highest diversity of large mammals in Kenya so you can imagine how rewarding these excursions must be. You are accompanied into the bush by expert Samburu guides and trackers who will help ensure every safari is a learning experience for both young and old. Camp meals comprise hearty home-cooked meals served outside under the shade of a tree or beneath the bright, starlit sky.

Day 5 – 8: Fly to Sosian Lodge in the central Laikipia highlands

You arrive next at Sosian Lodge, a beautifully restored Kenyan ranch house built on 60 000 acres of privately-owned land in the central Laikipia highlands. The Family Cottage has double and triple interconnected rooms which afford sweeping views across the Laikipia plains to Mount Kenya. Guided horseback safaris are a popular lodge activity which allow you to spot animals like elephant, lion, giraffe and African wild dog in their natural environment. Sosian caters to all tastes from a casual game of tennis or a gentle walk, to galloping alongside zebra. Cultural experiences like visits to a nearby Samburu village can also be arranged.

Day 8 – 12: Fly to Hemingway’s Watamu in Watamu National Park

Head now for the tropical retreat of Hemingway’s Watamu, a bespoke hotel on the Kenyan coast where you can unwind with your family in barefoot luxury. Wake up every morning to the smell of the warm breeze coming off the Indian Ocean and the most awe-inspiring views. The coral reefs around Watamu are a paradise for diving and snorkelling with over 600 fish species inhabiting these protected marine park waters. Other fun family activities offered at Watamu are deep-sea fishing as well as dolphin and whale-watching cruises. Or you can choose to spend your carefree days on the hotel’s shaded terrace doing nothing more than admiring the ocean with a tall cocktail in hand. At the hotel spa, you can treat yourself to a selection of beauty treatments to top off yet another perfect day in Africa.
