Take in two of Kenya’s most prolific wildlife reserves in the north and southwest of this splendid country. Spend four days with your family in the fairy tale Laikipia with the best African wild dog sightings in Kenya. While at this unassuming and authentic bush camp, you’ll discover many rare wildlife species and enjoy activities specially tailored to families with children. From there, you fly to Kenya’s famed Masai Mara reserve to stay in an eco-camp where game-viewing is complemented by hot-air ballooning and soul-enriching visits to a traditional Masai village.

Itinerary

Day 1 – 2: Fly to Nairobi in Kenya

Just a short drive from Nairobi’s International Airport, Fairview Hotel is the right place to recharge your batteries before setting off on your family safari. With everything you need to relax including a pool, sun terrace and airy restaurant, you’ll be made to feel completely at ease by the friendly Fairview Hotel staff. Plus, if you need to make any last-minute purchases or conduct any business before flying out, it’s convenient to do this from your hotel.

Day 2 – 6: Fly to Laikipia Wilderness Camp in Laikipia North

Owned and managed by a delightful Zimbabwean couple, Laikipia Wilderness Camp is your idyllic home away from home in Northern Kenya. Laikipia is inhabited by the highest diversity of mammals in Kenya which you’ll meet on your twice-daily game drives, and while stalking through the bush on foot. Some unusual species found in this corner of Laikipia include, among others, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and the rare African wild dog. It’s the deliberately basic camp infrastructure and amenities that make this authentic safari camp the unforgettable family getaway that it is. Accommodation includes four family tents, each having a double room with an interconnecting twin for smaller children. When not spotting game in the unspoilt wilderness, loads of family adventures await like swimming and fishing in the river, rock climbing and fly-camping under the stars.

Day 6 – 10: Fly to Mara Olapa Camp in Masai Mara National Reserve

Not far from the renowned Kaboso Crossing in Masai Mara National Reserve, guests at Mara Olapa Camp are often treated to encounters with lion or leopard just moments after starting a game drive. The solar-powered bush camp features six luxurious ensuite tents, including a spacious family tent with two ensuite rooms and an adjoining lounge. Your tent’s private verandah is designed with ‘at-home’ game viewing in mind and is the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or birdwatching with a pair of binoculars in the heat of the day. Punctuate your guided bush excursions with any number of family activities like hot-air ballooning or a visit to a traditional Masai village. Sundowners are a rewarding conclusion to any evening game drive and should you wish to be out for a full day on safari, the camp chef will be delighted to pack you a picnic lunch. Return to camp and exchange bush tales around the fire, the only sounds being the crackle of burning wood and the not-so-distant roar of lions.
