South Luangwa, Lolebezi & Victoria Falls

Taking in some of Southern Africa’s mightiest rivers and the abundant wildlife that frequent them, this 10-day family safari combines three dramatic settings for up-close encounters with Zambia’s big game, predators and birds. With the world’s largest hippo population calling the Luangwa Valley their home, there’s nowhere better to see these curious beasts that are surprisingly quick on their feet. Then it's onto wildlife spotting along the banks of the Zambezi River before completing your family adventure of a lifetime by enjoying a whole host of family-friendly activities around the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls.

Itinerary

Day 1 – 5: Fly to Kaingo Camp in South Luangwa National Park

Kaingo Camp (meaning ‘leopard’ in the local Nyanja language) welcomes families with children aged 10 and over. All six of their chalets boast secluded outdoor bathtubs and private decks overlooking the game-rich Luangwa River. From your veranda, you can easily spend hours watching lurking hippos blow bubbles and aquatic birds fishing for their lunch. The guiding at Kaingo is world-class but also very relaxed with flexibility key to their approach, especially when it comes to families. Exclusive to guests are also three photographic hides, each with a different focus: elephants crossing the Luangwa River, carmine bee-eaters and hippos wading in a deep pool at the confluence of the Luangwa and Mwamba rivers. An added bonus is that Kaingo has facilities for you to upload and edit your images when you come back from your twice-daily game drives. For a unique into-the-wild experience, you can even spend the afternoon trekking through the bush on foot with an armed guide to a mobile camp where you’ll spend a magical night under the stars before tucking into bed and falling asleep to the sounds of nocturnal animals.

Day 6 – 8: Fly to Lolebezi Camp in Lower Zambezi National Park

Set in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lolebezi Camp offers some of the most profound wildlife sightings this side of the Zambezi. The camp is equipped with four elegant suites and two double family units which are fully air-conditioned and have their own private plunge pool and river views. Renowned for its large leopard population and elephant herds, this bucket-list safari destination is best experienced on a walking safari, which allows you to observe the animals and terrain at ground level while armed guides share their intimate knowledge of the Luangwa ecosystem. Your prime location on the river at Lolebezi means that a long list of water-based activities are at your disposal, from catch-and-release fishing to canoeing and romantic sunset river cruises. Wherever you happen to be in this wetland paradise, listen out for the cry of the fish eagle! The Ngwana Club for children offers a varied menu of fun and educational safari activities, so parents can have some time off to be pampered at the spa.

Day 9 – 10: Fly to Toka Leya in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Toka Leya is situated in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a short drive from Livingstone and the breathtaking Victoria Falls. Aside from nine twin-bedded standard tents, the camp also features three spacious family tents which sleep four, making it ideal for a multi-generational safari. With one of the Seven Wonders of the World on your doorstep, there’s a wealth of fun activities to capture the imagination, ranging from high-adrenaline bungee jumping to completely unwinding with a spa treatment. For this reason, Toka Leya doubles as a thrill-seeker’s paradise and a stargazer’s dream come true. On expertly guided game drives, there’s an opportunity to encounter endangered animals like white rhino or capture a photograph of rare bird species like the African finfoot or half-collared kingfisher. Back at camp, it’s just as easy to keep the children happily occupied, whether it be making a traditional rod for catch-and-release fishing, ticking off bird species on a child-friendly walking safari or planting a tree to make African memories that will last a lifetime. With so much to delight the senses, Toka Leya will provide a storybook ending to your Zambian safari adventure.
